Introduction to the pathway

Who is this learning pathway for?

This on-line pathway has been designed to support the mental health and social care workforce who contribute to the delivery of care that is organised through the Care Programme Approach. It is intended for those who are not functioning as CPA care co-ordinators. If you are a care co-ordinator we recommend an alternative learning resource that is available at www.lincoln.ac.uk/ccawi/CPA.htm entitled Refocusing the CPA: A learning resource for care co-ordinators (designed to be used in a taught programme).

Changes to the Care Programme Approach for mental health in England were published in March 2008 following wide consultation (DH 2008).  This learning pathway has been produced to support people who contribute to the delivery of a CPA plan of care.  It is vitally important that these people understand what CPA is, and how significant their contribution (no matter how large or small) is to the successful implementation and delivery of high quality care.

This learning pathway may be relevant to others who are not a part of the mental health and social care workforce. For example, service users, carers and voluntary workers may find the content and exercises useful even though it was not designed specifically for them.

CPA Trainers Manual How to use this learning pathway

  • This pathway is a reflective on-line learning package, which you can work through in your own time and at your own pace.  We have attempted to keep the information down to the essentials of CPA.  However, we would recommend that you try to meet with others involved in CPA delivery to share and discuss your thoughts and actions and compare them with colleagues.
  •  The pathway is divided into units of learning that may be worked through individually in short sessions or collectively in a longer period of study. We know that on-line learning activities are generally more productive when people take breaks and we recommend this mode of study.
  • To read the pdf links for the pathway you will need Adobe

Each unit consists of learning outcomes, information, interactive exercises and links to relevant reading. The reflective exercises prompt you to think about your reaction to ideas and to consider their application to your own practice. WE DO RECOMMEND THAT YOU PRINT OFF THE EXERCISE BOOK TO RECORD YOUR RESPONSES AS YOU WORK THROUGH THIS PACKAGE.

Evaluation

An evaluation survey is included at the end of the learning pathway (in the Summary section and a link on the Course Work menu). Your evaluation will be used to review and improve the learning resource. Please take the time to answer these questions as your feedback is crucial to this process.

Please note some of the links in the materials are to PDF documents. If you do not have a PDF Reader on your computer you can download it from this link: Adobe Reader Download. Some PC settings prevent opening PDF documents online so you may have to download the PDFs to your hard drive before opening them.
